Implementation of Islamic Business Ethics in Traditional Market
A Case Study of Rego Market, Serang
Keywords:
Islamic business ethics, traditional markets, trade transaction, sharia economy, moral economyAbstract
Objective - This study investigates the extent to which Islamic business ethics are practiced in the transactions conducted within Rego Traditional Market in Padasuka Village, Petir Subdistrict, Serang Regency. In an environment marked by intense economic competition, this research seeks to understand whether Muslim traders adhere to ethical standards derived from Islamic teachings, which emphasize justice, responsibility, honesty, and the freedom of contract.
Design/Method - The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach based on literature review and observational analysis of trade practices in traditional markets. Classical Islamic economic principles and contemporary scholarly perspectives are synthesized to evaluate the alignment of market behaviors with Shariah-based ethical norms.
Findings- The analysis reveals that while elements of Islamic business ethics—particularly truthfulness and personal responsibility—are relatively evident in trader-customer interactions, the principles of justice and free will are less consistently applied. This discrepancy is largely influenced by cultural practices, limited ethical literacy, and economic pressures that prioritize profit over fairness. The findings underscore the need for ethical reinforcement through education, social awareness, and the integration of Shariah principles into everyday market practices.
