THE LEGITIMACY OF THE DISCIPLINE OF QIRA`AT IN THE QUR'AN (A Critical Study of Ignaz Goldziher's Views)

In Goldziher's view, the qirā'āt that developed in the present day are the work of people in the past due to the absence of official signs (dots and harakat) in the Qur'an at that time. In Goldziher's view, this is a form of Qira`at Inconsistency, so that the qirā'āt of the Qur'an are no longer valid as believed by the majority of Muslims. In response to Goldziher, the author uses linguistic theory, namely analyzing every phrase that has a variety of qirā'āt. The analysis focuses on the form and meaning of a phrase that has a variety of qirā'āt. In linguistics, a word can have various forms but still have the same meaning, or it can also have the same substance. The conclusions of this paper are, first, that the various words in the qirā'āt of the Qur'an do not have different meanings, but rather have the same meaning. Second, the differences in words and meanings in the qirā'āt do not invalidate the substance of the meaning of the Qur'an, but rather reinforce each other.
